Sitting in my chair trying to read, it is evident that my cat wants attention as she jumps into my lap and blocks the view of my book. Somehow she wants to be right up in my face. This time of the year I also find myself covered in cat hair and I can’t seem to brush her enough. I have a tendency at times to get upset with her, but I am thankful that she wants my attention and she can’t control the cat hair.
It made me wonder how many times I get in the way of God rather than working together. Do I underuse or discard gifts that God has given me when I chose not to use them to bless God. Like my cat, God continues to try and get my attention even when I don’t listen or respond as he would like.
As I take the time to give my cat some love and attention, I can see her joy and it makes me happy. So I think it is with God as we give of our time and talents to walk in God’s ways. How happy we both are as we share the blessings of God. Help us Lord to be open to your will at all times. Amen, Amen
Inland District Annual Picnic, All District Laity and Clergy Families are Invited to Moran UMC, 3601 E 65th Avenue, Spokane on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 3:00 p.m. Come celebrate the new church building of Moran UMC while enjoying a potluck picnic (bring your favorite dish to share), meet and the new pastors of the Inland District and listen to the marimba music of Covenant UMC; Sue Robinson, pastor of Deer Park UMC, will guide us through getting acquainted games.
Plans for Sunday school in September:
Our Sunday school lessons have arrived!! We will begin Sunday school for ages 3 through 6th grade in September. If there are those who would like to help, or know children who would attend this offering please let the church office know so we can include them in a special mailer about the fall programs in our church. Anyone who would be willing to teach or be a part of this through music or story telling or whatever your talent may be, feel welcome to participate as well. Children truly are the future of our church, so let this be an opportunity for all of us to help our church grow. Jerry Zumalt will be facilitating an adult class. This will be in the 9:45 a.m. time frame. Please prayerfully consider helping with this important part of our church program in some way!
Some of us will be putting together a “kit” for any children interested to use during our 11 am worship time. If you would like to help with this, please let Pastor Barb know.
Choir practice to start in September: just a note to say we will be starting our choir practice soon. Watch in the bulletin for specific date. It will be Monday evenings at 7 pm. Invite others to join us!! Thanks to Wendy Lindsley for ordering the music for maybe a couple of specials around Thanksgiving and several for Advent!!!

Covenant Discipleship groups are where disciples who make disciples are formed. Patterned after the early Methodist class meeting, these groups provide a simple and practical method for developing leaders in discipleship. They are open to any member of the congregation who is willing to spend an hour each week in mutual accountability for the basics of Christian living.

The Trustees are pleased to announce the remodeling of the front entrance to the Church is now completed. Come to Church Sunday and view for yourself. New doors, new siding, new soffits and a fresh coat of paint complete the remodeling. We have had a lot of help in making this happen, Ted and Wendy Lindsley gave us some door options, The United Methodist Women selected the door style, and colors. Norm Rice Construction was the low bidder, lowest of the three bids received, and Norm worked closely with us to be sure we were not surprised at the outcome. It was an expensive project costing us $14,316.56 of this the custom made doors were by far the largest expense costing about $10,000. They are quality doors and should last a long time if properly cared for.
The Trustees are talking to Grangeville Glass to get the casement windows in front of the Church fixed so the hardware works on them. They are Marvin Windows and replacement hardware may not be easily found.
We want to thank Drew Lindsley for caring for our lawn this summer.

Our next meeting will be in the fall on Wednesday, September 11, 10 am, at the church with no host lunch following. All are invited to join us.
The Sharing Circle.
We have decided to discontinue this until the fall. Watch the bulletin for our next meeting. We usually meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. If you have ideas for a study, please talk to Pastor Barb or Rose Mangini (983-0489).
Health Kits for UMCOR. In September, at our UMW District Annual meeting, we will be putting together kits to be taken to UMCOR in Salt Lake City. The items needed are: 1 hand towel 15” x 25” to 17”x 27” (kitchen cleaning and microfiber towels not acceptable), 1 washcloth, 1 comb (comb needs to be sturdy and at least 8” long – no pocket combs or picks please – rattail combs and combs without handles are acceptable), 1 metal nail file or clipper (no emery boards or toenail clippers please), 1 bath size soap (3 oz. and larger sizes only all brands are acceptable – do not remove from original packaging), 1 toothbrush (adult size only do not remove from original packaging), 6 adhesive bandages (¾” to 1 “ size common household band aids), 1 plastic bag one gallon size (sealable bags), & $1.00 to purchase toothpaste. A basket in the coffee room will collect these items. (Just bring a few of these items if you wish) They are needed by Wednesday, September 8. Thanks!
School Supply Drive: Community Action Partnership, YWCA & Opportunities Unlimited will be conducting a School Supply Drive has started and will accept items through Monday, August 12th.
Yellow barrels will be placed at Sterling Savings, King’s Discount Store & Irwin Drug. Donations are also welcome at the CAP office at 117 W North St. or YWCA office at 221 W Main #21 in Grangeville. Distribution day will be Thursday, August 15th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm @ the Soltman Center. Please donate items from the list below.

Food bank news: Rice – rice and more rice!!! We also REALLY need food for diabetics and gluten free individuals. We need jam/ jelly, jell-o, pudding, gravy packets/seasoning packets, even small containers of salt and pepper (like the little ones in a set for camping). (We are also getting low on non-food items such as Shampoo/ conditioners/ soaps. We gave away our last bottle of dish soap – small is best. These items are for emergency situations.) We could also use some small bottles of cooking oil.
We can always use volunteers so no one has to be there all the time. Have a great day and thanks to your church for all their help. We appreciate all of you.
We may have to start running 2 u-hauls now and then and need anyone willing to drive a u-haul (22ft). We do not want to wear anyone out so need extra people. Hauling will always be done on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday. Truck usually leaves around 8:30 am so the load can get unloaded early.

Help Needed: REBUILD ALASKAN HOMES AFFECTED BY YUKON RIVER FLOODING
Experienced UMVIM volunteers needed thru September. By Jim Truitt, PNW UMVIM Disaster Response Coordinator, and Kathy Bryson, Early Response Team member.
Huge ice flows cascaded down the Yukon River in late May jamming up river bends and causing massive ice dams and flooding across the tundra and into the villages along the river. Homes in Alakanak, Emmonak, Galena, Ft. Yukon, Circle and Tok were heavily damaged by the fast moving water and huge blocks of ice. By early June, the Alaskan Governor declared the flooding a disaster leading to a Presidential Declaration for Individual Assistance and engaging FEMA with the process of recovery.
The timeframe left for recovery of the damaged homes before winter sets in is very short. Transportation to the villages and the ability to barge supplies up the Yukon River become very difficult after the first of October. Barges that bring in supplies and living essentials quit making the trip in mid- to late-September. Volunteers willing to quickly come together in recovery teams can expect to be securing and rebuilding homes into a livable condition so families can move back in before winter.
Because of the need for experienced volunteers, a small recovery window and the remote location, FEMA has agreed to provide round trip airfare from the volunteer’s home airport to Anchorage and the charter flights to and from the duty site. FEMA is also providing base camp lodging, food, tools, equipment, and the required building supplies for volunteers willing to commit to working on site for at least two weeks. The travel expense and short working time dictate the need for skilled and experienced volunteers. The target date for the first teams on site is August 10th.
Faith-based organizations have always been a key participant in the recovery from any disaster and this one is no exception. Members of the Mennonite Disaster Service, Samaritans Purse, World Renew (formerly CRWRC), and the United Methodist Church have had teams in the Yukon River area villages assessing the damage and determining what they can do to assist in the recovery. Collectively, these groups believe they can make a significant contribution to the recovery effort as they have many times before.
The Pacific Northwest and Alaska United Methodist Conferences are committed to partnering with these faith-based organizations to help the villagers recover from this disaster and invite other Methodist Conferences and faith-based organizations to join us. We encourage you to prayerfully discern your willingness and ability to join others in this service to those in need of our help.
