Methodist Messenger: January, 2016

From the Pastor:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faithful few who are present in worship every week.  I realize that some weeks you are tired and some weeks the service may seem boring or last too long, but you are here.  You come even though you can’t always hear or can’t see that well.  You come even when you have aches and pains. You come even though you may disagree with the way things are done, or with what is said.  You come even when you have a thousand other things to get done at home or work.  You come and bring your visitors with you. You come for the worship, fellowship and education, which you provide for each other. You come and by your presence God becomes present also.  May God continue to bless the congregation’s with your presence and may others be inspired to follow, for God becomes real to us as we open ourselves up to the word and give praise to him.  You are an inspiration to us all in our spiritual journey. Praise God!

Yours in Christ,

The Snippet Corner: This is the start of our brand new series of John Wesley’s sermons. This sermon is 124: “The Heaven Treasure in Earthen vessels”

  1. How long was man a mere riddle to himself! For how many ages were the wisest of men utterly unable to reveal the mystery to reconcile the strange inconsistencies, in him,— the wonderful mixture of good and evil, of greatness and littleness, of nobleness and baseness (barrenness). The more deeply they considered these things the more they took, in order to clear up the subject, the more they were bewildered in vain, uncertain conjectures.
  2. But what all the wisdom of man was unable to do, was in due time done by the wisdom of God. When it pleased God to give an account of the origin of things, and of man in particular, all the darkness vanished away, and the clear light showed.

“God said, Let us make man in our image. “ In the image of God man was made. Hence we are enabled to give a clear, satisfactory account of the greatness, the Excellency, the dignity of man. But “man being in honor” did not continue therein, but rebelled 20 against his sovereign Lord. Hereby he totally lost, only the favor, but likewise the image of God. And hence we are taught to give a clear, intelligible account of the littleness and baseness of man.

Morning Prayer: Almighty god, Father of all mercies, I Thy unworthy servant, desire to present myself, with all humility, before Thee, to offer morning sacrifice of love thanksgiving.

“Step By Step”

He does not lead me

Year by year,

Nor even day by day;

Step by step

My path unfolds

My Lord directs my way.

Tomorrow’s plans I do not know;

I only know this minute.

But He will say, “This is the way,

By faith now walk ye in it.”

And I am glad that it is so,

Today’s enough to bear;

And when tomorrow comes, His

grace shall far exceed its care.

What need to worry then, or fret?

The God who gave His Son

Holds all my moments in His hand

And gives them one by one.
